At least 38 people were killed when a bus went off the road in southern Italy on Sunday night. Several of the victims will be children, according to the newspapers La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera. – The situation is critical. We are working to save as many lives as possible, said a spokesman for the local fire department to La Repubblica after the accident. The bus slid about 30 feet down into a ditch after running off the road at a bridge on the highway between Naples and Bari. Seriously injured 33 casualties were taken out of the bus, while the other three were found in the wreckage.
Eleven passengers were taken out of the bus wreckage alive and taken to hospital. Several of them with serious injuries. According to Corriere della Sera two died of the injured in the hospital during the night. Thus, at least 38 people lost their lives in the serious bus accident. The newspaper writes that the coffins of the 36 who died at the scene were lined up along the road, surrounded bloody clothes, sheets and passenger luggage. The rescue work was difficult and dangerous because of a large concrete block that hung over the scene and loosening. Several times during the work were all asked to be silent, so that one could listen for signs of life from the injured passengers.
